Update February 2023

There have been some recent, and incredible, shows of support for regulation.

The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) wrote a letter to Minister Milliken in January, in support of regulation in Alberta. CLHIA represents 99% of health and life insurance business in Canada.  This is so very helpful, but also will be helpful to ALL provinces striving to achieve regulation in the public interest. Please read this important letter!

The Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) recently passed a resolution in support of CCTA. RMA represents 69 rural municipalities in Alberta. They wrote to Minister Copping to request that they work with ACTA to open the CCTA as soon as possible.

Please read their full resolution here.

In fall 2022, the following also wrote letters of support for regulation, and explaining the negative impacts of stalling the regulation, from their perspectives. Unfortunately, the government has not yet responded.

  • Indigenous Counsellors

  • 85 Alberta Employers

  • 5 prominent post-secondaries with programs in Alberta

Advocacy Opportunity this Week!

CBC Special about Addictions,
"The Way Out"

CBC Calgary is publishing a week-long series to highlight the people and policymakers searching for a “way out” of the addiction crisis.

Please engage with this series!

They are asking for the public to comment and to provide stories from their experience.  This is an opportunity to voice the widespread perspective that regulation is critical for safety in services and increasing access to addiction and mental health services.  Please share your powerful stories (while maintaining client confidentiality) about the need for regulation.

Regulation in the News

Please read and share this recent article about how regulation is preventing access to services for Indigenous peoples...

Calls to Action

Let’s bring the CHLIA letter and the RMA resolution to the attention of the public and the media!

The public should know that the insurance industry has confirmed that the stalling of regulation is preventing Albertans from receiving coverage for services and is unnecessarily keeping Albertans unsafe.

We ask ACTA Members and supporters to do the following:

  • Send the link to the CHLIA letter and the RMA resolution  to your local newspapers and any other media, to ask for media to highlight how lack of regulation is directly affecting the ability to provide services

  • Voice your perspective and stories from your experience (while maintaining confidentiality) to the CBC about how safe mental health and addiction services, through regulation, is also critical to the system of addictions recovery. Click to share your comments.
